Expands Research in DeWitt
SYRACUSE, N.Y., Mar. 7, 2007
Everest Trade Link Principal
Company, Carrier Corp. today announced it will
invest up to $2 million in lab upgrades and target
to add 25 new engineering positions at its DeWitt,
N.Y. campus starting this month. This investment
is to prepare Carrier’s commercial rooftop
air conditioning product lines for the U.S. Environmental
Protection Administration’s requirement
to phase out HCFC-22, an ozone depleting refrigerant,
in new equipment before 2010. Carrier Corp. is
a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX).
“I'm pleased that our engineering
center in Syracuse was selected for this investment,
which further enhances our research and development
focus for the site,” said Geraud Darnis,
Carrier president.
“Syracuse is the right
place to conduct the research and development
for this important program,” said Greg Powers,
Carrier vice president of Engineering. “We
will leverage our existing technical knowledge
base and significant laboratory facilities to
expand environmental technologies for these new
products.”
In May 2004, Carrier designated
Syracuse as one of its global lead design centers
to conduct research and development for a broad
range of air conditioning and refrigeration products.
With approximately 300 engineering staff, Syracuse
represents the largest engineering location for
Carrier in the world.
The United Nations Montreal Protocol
requires all countries to phase out ozone depleting
substances, such as CFC and HCFC refrigerants,
which include chlorine compounds known to cause
ozone depletion. Carrier has led the industry
in the phase out of ozone depleting refrigerants
and ceased global production of CFC-based equipment
in 1994, one year ahead of U.S. requirements and
16 years prior to developing country requirements.
Carrier was the first in the industry to develop
new non-ozone depleting technologies for commercial
and residential air conditioning systems.
“Carrier’s research
and development team in Syracuse has been central
to our ability to lead the world with environmentally
sound technologies that protect the Earth’s
critical ozone layer,” said John Mandyck
, vice president of Government and International
Relations. “Syracuse continues to serve
that role as we complete the transition to non-ozone
depleting alternatives for our commercial rooftop
systems. Industry leadership demands environmental
leadership with Carrier Syracuse serving an instrumental
role.”
Carrier Corp., headquartered
in Farmington, Conn., is the world’s largest
provider of heating, air conditioning and refrigeration
solutions. It is a subsidiary of United Technologies
Corp., a Hartford, Conn.-based provider of a broad
range of high-technology products and support
services to the aerospace and building systems
industries.
